Word of the Month:
QUARTERDECK -
The aftermost deck of a warship. In the age of sail, the
quarterdeck was the preserve of the ship's officers.

Knot of the Month:

CLOVE HITCH -
A type of knot. It consists of two identical half hitches
made successively around an object. Used as a traditional hitch,
that is loading only one end, the clove hitch is liable to slip.

It requires a load in each direction in order to be effective.
The knot is useful in situations where the length of the running
end needs to be adjustable.

To tie a clove hitch, first place a loop around the pole, with the
working end of the rope on top.  Run the working end round the
pole once more until you meet the place where the ropes
cross, then pass the working end under the cross.

Pull to tighten.

Calendar of Upcoming Events
May 17 – 18
– Regular Drill Weekend –
However – this is also Lilac Parade weekend and the kickoff of
the Poppy Sales.  This is a very important Fundraiser for us and
again maximum participation is needed to make this successful.
Review the signup sheet and let me know if there are errors
– I desperately need one or two cadets that can work the shifts
during the week of May 19 – 22 – so far, I’ve had ZERO
volunteers.  There will be a special “Reward” training at Laser
Quest for the cadets that can work extra shifts for Poppy
Donations.

May 19 – 22 – Poppy Sales – see sign-up sheet
May 24 – 25 – Poppy Sales – see sign-up sheet

June 14 – Fishing Fun at Gilchrist Pond in Colfax.  This will not
be a mandatory meeting, however, it’s a ton of fun for our cadets
to intermix with the community (we have 4 cadets (Beckmanns
& Baileys) from the Colfax area) and we get to bait hooks, fish
and assist the coordinators in various other areas.  Interested
cadets need to contact LT T. Fitch ASAP to reserve a spot on the
bus.

June 21 – 22 – Regular Drill Weekend – Switch to Salt & Pepper
uniform.  We have the NAPA Auto Car Show on Sunday, June 22 –
it’s an excellent opportunity for recruiting and getting the area
aware of our organization!  We also have Swim Qualifications
and tour of the Spokane Police Academy.

June 28 – 29 – Hoopfest Fundraiser – we make mega-bucks off
this two day event.  A sign-up sheet will be available as soon as
we confirm our zones.  We have asked to double our zones this
year as our cadet numbers have improved significantly and we
feel that we can cover more areas without difficulty.  Don’t let us
down!  This fund-raiser alone covers our unit expenses for the
winter months!

July 19 – 20 – Regular Drill Weekend – FIREFIGHTING WEEKEND

July 26 – Controlled Burn Firefighting for Cadets participating in
Hoopfest Weekend.

August 9 – 10 – Fairchild Air Show – featuring the US Navy Blue
Angels!  This is the first show they’ve done in Spokane in years!
We have several contacts in place to allow the cadets to
actually meet the Blue Angel Pilots!  Our primary responsibility is
crowd control and we hope to set up a recruiting booth – more
details will be coming on this fantastic event!

August 16 – 23 – Navy League Cadet Orientation at Fort Lewis,
WA.  Cost is $75 per cadet.  Use your hard earned vouchers to
pay for this training!  Transportation to the training will be via a
chartered bus (if we have enough cadets going to Orientation) –
transportation home is up to the parents, but attendance at
graduation is one of the most rewarding events in a cadet’s
career!  Sea Bag list has been provided – so start getting items
now – don’t wait until August!  You must be 11 years old to
attend Orientation – no exceptions/no waivers!

September 6 – 7 – Annual Family Campout – Location to be
determined

September 19-20 – Valley Fest

October – FLAGSHIP – Salem, Oregon

YOU ARE VISITOR #
OFFICER & STAFF
NOTES -

Commanding Officer -
We lost a cadet and an
instructor this month.  We
have two new cadets
coming onboard and we need
to keep getting our message
out to others.  June is just
around the corner, we are
crazy busy with training
opportunities and NOW is
the time to bring your
friends to see what we do.
The Jr. Lilac Parade was an
outstanding showing of true
patriotism and devotion to
our program – YOU guys did
an OUTSTANDING job and I
am amazed at how much you’
ve learned in such a short
period of time!  Keep up the
outstanding work and BRING
YOUR FRIENDS!  Young Ms.
Cord (not Cadet Cord) – I will
be watching for your
appearance in the very near
future – congratulations on
your upcoming birthday!
- LT FITCH - CO

Executive Officer-
We had a very successful Jr.
Lilac Parade – handed out
100 recruiting flyers and
answered a lot of questions.
You cadets have come in for
additional marching
practice, additional
recruiting opportunities and
now we are on the brink of
the busiest summer training
schedule you’ve had in many
years.  I expect to see 100%
effort in attending the events
of this summer (remember
how boring it is to be stuck
in the classrooms), well let’
s continue to come together
and let the rest of Spokane
know who we are and what
we can do!
